On Thursday and Friday, January 25&26, 2012, a Leadership Seminar was held as part of Beza Internationals Africa Arise Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was attended by a cross section of the population from all over Africa. Political and Church leaders, Business people, Medical Professionals, Educators, and Students all listened to inspiring messages from riveting speakers and panelists including Ms Christine Musisi, Ambassador Michael Battle, Ambassador Zachary Muburi-Muita, Dr. Miheret Debebe, Pastor Moses Chiluba, and Dr. Biruk Lambisso. The 4 topics addressed were: The World of Socio-economic Development, The World of Politics and Diplomacy, Transformed minds for Transformational Leadership, and The World of Intercessory Prayer. We discovered together that God is actively involved in all aspects of our world, and He is causing us to dream and take action; to be transformed and to transform society.

Africa Arise 2012 (Jan 25 - 29)

We just concluded our greatest Africa Arise conference ever- by far! We are exhausted yet energized at the same time. As always, it’s hard to put into words the events of this last week, but I will try. Powerful leadership workshops, featuring some of the greatest minds on the continent were conducted during the day, coupled by the conference rallies at night.

Wednesday, January 25

The entrance of the new African Union headquarters is the home to the statue of the late Kwame Nkrumah. His words spoken at the inaugural OAU Summit in 1963 are engraved on it: “Ethiopia shall stretch her hands unto God, Africa must unite.” Using this as my text, I spoke of how these two desires of this great father of Africa are to be achieved. The stretching of the hands to God usually insinuates an upward position of the hands. But sometimes He is not up, and Scripture is clear that it is the heart that God is concerned with, not necessarily the hands. The Samaritan woman in John 4 thought that God was on “this mountain,” but she discovered that to truly worship God in Spirit and in truth, she needed to face her stumbling block. There were two things she hated in life: Jews, and men. And yet it was the Jewish man who said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” As tribalism is one of the most crippling diseases of the African continent, we learned the importance of “stretching unto God” in the very places we would traditionally despise. As we overcome our issues, and learn what it means to be “joined together,” we correspondingly learn what it means to “rise” (Ephesians 2:22). There is no Africa Arise, without Africa first learning the power of truly stretching her hands to God.

Thursday, January 26

Pst. Moses Chiluba, founder of Healing Word Ministries in Lusaka, Zambia brought a prophetic word for the year 2012. He spoke about how this year will be the year where God will open specific gates for us. These gates will provide access for us into things we could not touch before, and usher in a new realm of glory for the church. He mentioned four specific things from Isaiah 60. Sons will come from afar bringing their silver and gold. Kings will serve you. Your gates will always stand open. The nation that does not serve you will perish. It is time for Africa to arise, and these spiritual gates are now open.

Friday January 27

Bishop David Oginde is the presiding Bishop of Christ is the Answer Ministries (aka Nairobi Pentecostal Church) in Nairobi, Kenya. He brought a word from 1Samuel 2-3 entitled, “It is Time to Listen.” In a time when the priesthood ministry had been defiled by Eli’s sons, Samuel grew in stature and favor and faithfully ministered unto the Lord. He had to learn to listen and discern the voice of God in a time when the word of the Lord was rare. But as he did so, the whole nation was impacted by what he heard. In order for Africa to arise, we must learn the discipline of listening to the Lord.

Saturday January 28

Apostle Robert Kasaro is the founder of Jesus Calls Worship Center in Matsapha, Swaziland. He delivered a message entitled “Operational Dynamics in the Marketplace.” Our problem many times as believers is that we are good at church protocol, but we don’t know how to engage the marketplace. Using Acts 16-17 as a text, he described how the slave girl in Philippi brought great profit for her masters by her divination. Economies of this earth are spirit driven. It is a fact we cannot afford to be ignorant of as believers. We must learn how to defend ourselves in the marketplace. We must learn the art of operating cross culturally. We must know the power of crowds and masses. We must have grace to govern, and we must learn the importance of strengthening others. Africa cannot arise without believers strategically and intentionally engaging the marketplace.

It was an honor for us to have with us for the third time, one of the great apostolic generals of Africa, Bishop Tudor Bismark, and his wife Pst. Chichi. They pastor Jabula Ministries in Harare, Zimbabwe, and have an extensive international ministry.

2Samuel 5:12 is where everything had come full circle for David, and he now knew that the Lord had established him as king. There are four kingdoms that the Bible mentions: The kingdom of God (Mt.6:33), of Satan (Mt.12:25), of the world (Luke 4:5-6), of men (Daniel 4:7). It is God’s desire for His church to rule in each kingdom. This rulership is transferred generationally. One generation conceives it, another generation grows the prophesy, and another harvests it. Our generation is the one that is strategically poised by God, for harvesting the dreams that had been in preparation in other generations. This is the time of dominion for God people and God’s church.

It was great to hook up once again with our brother Pete Odera, who brought a team of 18 people with him from Kenya, including Gospel musician Kaberia. Our special musical guest for this Africa Arise was Nigerian Gospel singer Uche, whose song “Double Double” has become the theme song for Ghanian President Atta Mill’s 2^nd presidential campaign (get it?). Waynay people! God is good- O, dabo dabo! Thank you everybody who worked so hard to make this conference a success. God bless you all. This is our time.

The 3^rd annual Africa Arise Conference, held from January 27-30 was by far our most significant ever. This event, hosted in conjunction with Bible Society, has proven to be a powerful platform to strategically address the challenges we see in the African continent.

By day, the African Biblical Leadership Forum assembled some of the brightest minds on the continent to deliberate on the pertinent issues that affect us all. The evenings were pulsating with the presence of God, as some of the leading African apostolic and prophetic voices took center stage to declare the word of the Lord. As we have done every year, we gathered once again with African Heads of State at the Annual Heads of State Prayer Breakfast. This also proved to be a great success.

The four day event concluded with a special ground breaking ceremony for our new facility, Africa Worship Center, and our closing ceremony, which was highlighted by the Tsidk Tshehay Choir, and a special song borrowed from our brothers and sisters from Nigeria- “Our God is Good- O!”

Beza Ministers to Canadian Pastors

It was a time of great impartation. Dr. Betta himself acknowledged it as being one of the most significant gatherings he had with fellow Ethiopians.

4/14 Window Global Summit

Dr. Betta was invited to speak at the 4/14 Window Global Summit in New York City in September. Founded by Luis Bush, the 4/14 Window is a movement rallying the church to reach the world by strategically targeting people at the most formative time of their lives. Studies have shown that the ages of 4 to 14 are the most significant in the development of a person. Dr. Betta shared a powerful message on the first encounter between the prophet Samuel, and the boy David. The prophet raised the horn of oil on the boy, because he did not see a boy in the boy. He saw a king in the boy.

Robert Jan Valster served on the pastoral staff at Beza for two years. It was a most fruitful time for us, and we were blessed by his enthusiasm and ministry. Robert moved back to his native land of Holland a little over a year ago, as the first Beza missionary. As of August, 2010, Beza Europe was officially registered with the Dutch government. God has connected him with some like- minded people, and they have already conducted several key outreach operations. We are excited about what God has in store for the continent of Europe.

Beza Honors David Rogers

We were all saddened at the news of the passing of our dear friend and brother David Rogers, founder and president of Joshua’s Way. There was a time when Beza needed help shoring up the US office, and it was Joshua’s Way that came in and helped us until we were able to stand on our own. Always a friend of Ethiopia, David invested heavily in addressing the needs he encountered here. He trained pastors, planted churches, was involved in water drilling and solar cooking projects. He led medical teams bringing much needed medical equipment and expertise to the city of Pawe in the Benishangul Gumuz region.

David Roger’s impact particularly hits home for us at Beza in the form of a young woman named Nardos Ayalew. Nardos was suffering from a heart condition that required a surgical procedure that was not available in Ethiopia. When David realized that she didn’t have the funds to travel, Joshua’s Way stepped in and covered expenses both for the trip to India and the surgery. Nardos not only survived, but she also got married, and today she works in our finance office.

We thank God for the gift of David Rogers, and we honor a life lived for the glory of God.

Organized in conjunction with the Evangelical Student Union of Ethiopia (EvaSUE) and Destiny – a young professionals fellowship from Beza Church, the event drew hundreds of recent graduates and their families to the Beza Tabernacle for a time of worship and commissioning. Dr. Betta Mengistu addressed the audience and then introduced Dr. Ben and Lilly Piper, who their testimony of how God enabled them to overcome various obstacles to achieve their academic goals. This event was a sign of Beza’s increasing involvement in the area of ministering to Ethiopia’s fast-growing university student population.
